The Johnstone Strait Whale Interpretive Centre Society is a non-profit society dedicated to marine education, research and interpretive programs. The Society initiated two projects this summer. One is an interpretive centre pilot project based in Telegraph Cove, nicknamed the "Bones Project". This project employs students in the preservation of skeletons of about 20 marine mammal species found in nearby waters, including the bones of "Finny" the fin whale. The sudden death of "Finny" occurred one summer day in 1999 when a passing cruise ship struck the whale as it slept peacefully in the Johnstone Strait, not far from Telegraph Cove.
